This story of the suffering inflicted on a child by her father’s abusive treatment of her mother is another example of the detrimental effects of witnessing domestic violence. The author, who does not name herself, had trouble throughout high school and college with depression and anxiety, and refused for many years to tell anyone that she was suffering, choosing instead to insist that she as fine and happy.

Fearing the stigma and rejecting the sympathy left her in a prison of her own making, unable to reach out for help as her home relationship poisoned her psychological state.
